Hi... I am a geologist by profession, I am starting this blog to provide a window into the amazing life of our planet THE EARTH. Being a geologist by profession, the landscape around me have always fascinated me. The lofty mountains covered with snow through out the year, large rivers (so large that you can not see across them) check out the width of Brahmaputra river in India, huge expanse of desert where the daily temperature range varies up to 50 degree Celsius and the unending ocean which we observe while standing on the shore.
Have you ever thought why our environment is continuously changing!! And if you observe carefully, there is a certain pattern in these changes. Like the day is hotter than the night, why it always snows in the hills even though it is closer to the sun. Why rivers always flow from the mountains to the sea, why do we have natural water springs, how in the world an oasis (type of a water body) is found in the middle of a desert. Have you ever thought why are the gigantic sand dunes in deserts and the tiny ripples on the bright sunny beach are so similar?
The oceans cover 3/4th part of the earth surface, it is a world in itself. There are 228,450 known species in the ocean — and as many as 2 million more that remain a total mystery. The deepest part of the ocean is deeper than the tallest mountain on Earth. We will talk about the various effects the ocean has on our lives how are we related to the ocean and how does it effects our existence.
In the later part of our journey we will be learning about the causes of sea level changes, ocean acidification, land erosion due to oceans, ocean currents and its effect on the earth climate anyhow the earth climate it self effects the ocean circulation. We will learn more about it in the future blogs.
This is the 21st century the CO2 levels have reached the highest levels likes of which have never been seen in the history of the Earth. Due to the industrial revolution during the 18thcentury in Europe and most of the other presently developed countries the forest cover has been reduced and these industries such as the steel smelting factories, Thermal power plants have relied on burning if coal to produce energy. All these processes have lead to the over exploitation of the resources and have caused the present situation.
We will discuss about the present scenario about the climate change, what effects will it have on the various communities of flora and fauna including the humans. How our lifestyles will be modified due to these changes.
The European countries are suffering through the heat waves and similarly the south Asian countries are facing stronger and fiercer cyclones. The cities in US are affected by the floods the Taxas floods are the most recent examples.
But we don’t need to be disheartened my friends.. its never to late to start a good thing. We will discuss what steps can be taken to counter these changes and how we can help our planet cope with these situations. We are living in a dynamic world where our activities are transforming the world around us.
